Dhaka University Hall Seat Controversy: Students Asked to Vacate Room for VP/GS

BD Result Online Education News Update

A controversy has surfaced at Sir AF Rahman Hall, Dhaka University (DU) after a group of students alleged that the hall provost verbally instructed them to vacate their room to accommodate hall council leaders — the Vice President (VP) or General Secretary (GS).

According to the students, six residents of Room 318 were summoned by the provost and asked to leave because the room was “traditionally reserved for VP-GS.”

However, the hall administration denies forcing anyone, stating it was only a “proposal, not an order.”

🛏️ What Happened?

A student named Mahmud Ridwan, resident of Room 318, said:

“The provost told us that we need to vacate the room because it is a VP-GS room and this has been a hall tradition for a long time.”

He also claimed that the provost accused them of staying there illegally, which upset the students.

Room 318 currently houses six students, but if allocated to VP/GS, only two students would use it — which Ridwan says is discriminatory.

🏛️ Provost’s Response

AF Rahman Hall Provost Quazi Mahfujul Hoque Supan told media:

  • He cannot force any student to leave a room.

  • The VP-GS relocation was only discussed in a hall council meeting.

  • If the students chose to move, they would be given a room of their choice.

He said:

“If the students do not agree, changing rooms is not possible. I cannot compel them.”

👥 VP’s Statement

Hall VP Rafiqul Islam also denied applying pressure:

“We only made a proposal to change the room. We never demanded the room at any cost.”

He explained that the VP-GS room was needed because:

  • Students visit VP and GS frequently with complaints and hall-related issues.

  • The room was originally built for VP-GS activities.
