MPO Teachers Issue Two-Day Ultimatum to Education Adviser — Threaten to Besiege Jamuna if Demands Not Met

Dhaka, October 2025 — Teachers and staff from MPO-listed private educational institutions have issued a two-day ultimatum to the Education Adviser to implement their key demands, including a raise in house rent allowance. They warned that failure to meet their demands by October 22 would lead to a large-scale protest and a siege of the Jamuna River area.

🕰️ Deadline Set for Government Action

The ultimatum was announced on Monday at a rally in front of the Central Shaheed Minar, where hundreds of protesting teachers gathered under the banner of the coalition of MPO-listed institutions seeking nationalization.

The coalition’s Member Secretary, Delwar Hossain Azizi, declared that the teachers’ movement would wait until October 22 for an official government notification.

“Our decision is that we will wait until October 22. If a notification is not issued even after that, Bangladesh has never seen the kind of environment that will be created. We will bring everyone to Dhaka and besiege the Jamuna,” said Azizi.

Sit-In March and Hunger Strike

The protesting teachers also announced a sit-in march from Central Shaheed Minar to Shahbagh on Tuesday at noon, where participants will wear black cloth as a symbol of protest.

Azizi said the coalition began an indefinite hunger strike from Monday. “From today we have gone on a hunger strike unto death. Four of our teachers have already fallen ill and received hospital treatment,” he stated.

He warned that if any protester dies during the hunger strike, the Education Adviser would have to take full responsibility.

🔥 Strong Message to the Education Adviser

Issuing a direct warning, Azizi criticized the Education Adviser Abrar, claiming that teachers no longer recognize his authority.

“If you, by following Mr. Abrar’s trickery, stand against the teachers, your office will be locked after a long march from all over the country,” Azizi said.

“We do not recognize Abrar as an adviser. If Abrar can, he must accept our demands and issue the notification. If not, he must leave the Ministry of Education,” he added.

🗣️ Nationwide Participation Encouraged

Azizi also urged MPO-listed teachers across the country to participate in local demonstrations if they cannot join the Dhaka protest.

“Those who cannot come to Shaheed Minar, you will take position every day from 11am to 12pm at district and upazila centers,” he instructed.

📚 Background of the Movement

The teachers’ alliance has long demanded the nationalization of MPO-listed educational institutions, citing low pay, poor facilities, and lack of job security. Their current three-point demand includes:

  1. Raising house rent allowance by 20%

  2. Steps toward full nationalization of MPO-listed institutions

  3. Improvement in service and financial benefits

Last week, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed his party’s support for the teachers’ cause, promising that if the BNP returns to power, it will prioritize the nationalization of non-government educational institutions.
